Description
Stephen Wang was born in 1900 when more than 16,000 Chinese Christians and over 200 missionaries were killed in the rebellion which swept through north and north-west China. When he was eight a Christian pastor came to their village and he became the first Chinese convert in the village. At twenty-nine he became headmaster of the Tangshan school in Hopei, north China.
He travelled to Britain to study at Cambridge in 1948. During his absence from home the Communists gained control of China. "Stephen, at least for the present, you must forget about returning home," informed friends told him. "The pain in my heart," he wrote to one, "is increasing so heavily that I feel it is nearly beyond my power to bear." Yet in Europe he commenced his most effective ministry, founding the Chinese Church in London, and the Chinese Overseas Christian Mission, with branches around the world.
He was never able to return to China but always in the west he was thinking and praying for the Church at home. Until 1964 he received letters from his daughter imprisoned in a labour camp for her faith.
